Onondaga edges the Lady Cannoneers
Jefferson Women's Basketball lose a close one at home against the Onondaga Lazers.
On Saturday the Jefferson women's basketball team faced off with MSAC rival Onondaga Community College. Their second contest in 3 weeks saw OCC take the first matchup in an 8 point victory at their place in late January. A fitting matchup up during college basketballs rivalry week, the Lady Cannoneers were ready for another showdown with the Lazers.
Both teams would battle back and forth for the majority of the first half. Jefferson would hold a 3 point lead at the end of the first quarter behind a hot start from sophomores Ashlyn Eyles and Chelsey Raven. The pace of the second quarter would slow down considerably and favor Jefferson as they took a 5 point lead into the halftime break. With both teams regrouping at halftime, Onondaga would look to change the pace of the third quarter. OCC would outscore Jefferson by ten in the 3rd and take a 5 point lead into the fourth quarter. That wasn't the end of the fight for Jefferson, they would mount a comeback that would come up 2 points shy of sending the game to extra time. "My kids played their hearts out today." Stated Coach Woodward "On paper we are out numbered and out matched, and my kids brought everything they had for 40 minutes. I hope they're proud of how they represent our program and how hard they compete for us. We've been a very good rebounding, and free throw shooting team all year. We narrowly lost both those battles. Hats off to Onondaga, they got us today." Ashlyn Eyles led all scorers with a season, and career high 31 points. Sophomore forward Chelsey Raven totaled 20 points on the day.
With a well deserved off week ahead, the Lady Cannoneers will regroup and head to Corning this Saturday for their last regular season road game of the year. They currently sit at 8-2 in Mid-State play, which is good for 2nd place.
