The Lady Cannoneers Split at the Annual Torchia Classic
Jefferson women's basketball competed in the Annual Torchia Classic this past weekend.
The Lady Cannoneer's kicked off their 2015-16 season like previous years at the Torchia Classic in Utica, NY. Saturday saw the Lady Cannoneer's matched up with Queensborough Community College from New York City. The Region XV and Region III matchup saw Jefferson rush out to an early 15-4 first quarter lead. Allowing only one field goal in the first 10 minutes. After the first quarter the lead would hold for Jefferson as they managed to hold off every run Queensborough made throughout the remaining 30 minutes. Saturdays win was a 10 player effort, seeing 8 Cannoneer's score on their way to victory. Ogdensburg freshmen duo Susie Morrow, and Riley Luckie led the way notching 15 and 16 point respectfully.
Sunday's Championship matchup saw a 4th consecutive Torchia Classic Championship between Mohawk Valley Community College and Jefferson. Before tipoff Mohawk held the series lead with a 2-1 Championship record. But this year saw a matchup of two entirely new teams, twenty freshman took the floor between the teams. The first quarter was a back and forth battle seeing multiple ties throughout the quarter with either team taking no more than a two point lead in the first 8 minutes. Mohawk supplied a late quarter run to take a 16-8 first quarter lead. Sophomore forward Courtney Harrington teamed up with backcourt duo Marisa Clark and Riley Luckie to lead the first half charge for the Cannoneer's. After the halftime break the Lady Cannoneer's chipped away at the 11 point halftime deficit and knocking it down to 7 with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. This would be the first of two solid efforts in the second half at regaining the lead, unfortunately both would fall just short. The new face Lady Cannoneer's showed Coach Woodward promise for the rest of the year, battling the number three nationally ranked Hawks for 40 minutes.
