Lady Cannoneers Lose 2 Close Ones on the Road

The SUNY Jefferson Cannoneers softball team traveled to Corning for a doubleheader against the Lady Red Barons.  Corning would score an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning of Jefferson starting pitcher Sarah Johnson.  Corning would increase the lead to 3-0 in the top of the 3rd on two hits and two sacrifice flies.  The lead would grow to 4-0 after 5 innings.  The Lady Cannoneers would break into the scoring column in the top of the 6th scoring 2 runs and leaving the bases loaded.  Neither team would score in the 7th inning giving the Red Barons the 4-2 victory.  The Cannoneers managed only 5 hits off Corning starting pitcher Emily McCreery with 2 of the hits coming off the bat of Bailey Zicari.   Sarah Johnson allowed only 6 hits while striking out 9 for the Cannoneers.

Corning would once again take the lead in game two, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, 2 in the second inning, and 3 more in the 3rd inning against Jefferson starting pitcher Georgia Barton.  Jefferson would get 1 run in the bottom of the 1st to make the score 8-1 after 3 innings.  The Red Barons would plate single runs in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 10-1 lead.  The Cannoneer's bats would come alive in the bottom of the 5th inning as SUNY Jefferson sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored 7 runs of Corning's starting pitcher Jayden Hill.  Sarah Johnson entered the circle with one out and one on it the top of the 6th and held Corning scoreless the rest of the way.  Jefferson would make the score 10-9 with a run in the bottom of the 6th.  The Lady Cannoneers would put runs on first and second with 2 outs in the 7th inning, but the rally would come up short as Hill retired the final hitter on a hard hit ground ball to second.

The Lady Cannoneers played four close games over the weekend against the undefeated Red Barons (the 3rd Ranked NJCAA Division III team), but unfortunately were unable to pull out a victory.  The Cannoneers record stands at 10-8.
