Cannoneers Rally Late to Top Thomas College, 3-2
Jefferson holds on for the win against Thomas College.
WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Shaking off any lingering holiday rust, the Jefferson Community College Cannoneers returned from break with energy, resilience, and a flair for late-game drama, battling their way to a thrilling 3–2 comeback victory over Thomas College on Saturday.
The matchup opened with a tightly contested first period, as both teams traded scoring chances but failed to break through. Jefferson's defensive unit looked sharp early, turning aside multiple Terrier rushes, while the Cannoneers' forecheck created pressure of its own in the offensive zone. Despite the intensity, the opening frame ended in a scoreless deadlock.
Thomas College seized momentum in the second period, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity to notch the game's first goal and take a 1–0 lead. The Cannoneers weathered a flurry of Terrier chances soon after, with goaltending holding firm to keep the deficit at one heading into the final period.
That set the stage for Jefferson's strongest stretch of the afternoon.
Early in the third, Dylan Johnson ignited the comeback with a timely power‑play strike, tying the game 1–1 and energizing the Cannoneers bench. Moments later, Tyler Sovie buried the go‑ahead goal, giving Jefferson its first lead at 2–1 and putting Thomas College on its heels.
But the Terriers refused to go quietly. With time winding down, Thomas punched in the equalizer, leveling the game at 2–2 and setting up a tense, frenetic finish.
The Cannoneers saved their best moment for last.
With just over a minute remaining in regulation, Mason Savage picked the Terriers pocket behind their net for a sweet wrap-around game‑winner, sending the Jefferson bench into celebration and sealing a hard‑earned 3–2 victory in the team's post‑break debut.
The win marks a strong start to the second half of the season for Jefferson, who look to carry this momentum into their upcoming road matchup. The Cannoneers now turn their attention to a trip west to face SUNY Erie, aiming to keep the intensity high and come out of the weekend with another statement performance.
