Jefferson Falls to Colgate in Overtime
Jefferson Hockey falls to Colgate in Overtime 6-5.
The Jefferson Community College hockey team traveled to Colgate University for a much-awaited rematch. The Raiders knocked the Cannoneers out of the UNYCHL playoffs at the end of last season.
Both teams played well with the puck to begin the game, creating solid scoring chances. Colgate would end up scoring the first 2 goals of the game, and the Cannoneers found themselves down 2 goals just a little more than 5 minutes into the game. But it wasn't long before Captain Cameron Winebar received a nice pass from Assistant Captain Jack Mills and scored JCC's first of the game. That goal was followed by another one, scored by JCC's Owen Ebersol. We had more ping pong action, as Colgate scored one, and Jefferson's Owen Bismarck scored one to end the 1st period 3-3.
The 2nd period started with a burst of energy from the Cannoneers. Kyle Gionet's power play goal, assisted by Winebar and Bismarck, put JCC in the lead at 4-3. These three players, leading in points across all divisions in the UNYCHL, were showing their prowess. The lead was held for a good stretch, until the Raiders managed to tie the game at 4-4 just before the period concluded.
The third period begins, and the tension is high, with both teams battling to take this game home. The tension was broken on a deep pass from Gionet to Winebar, and Winebar scored a breakaway goal low blocker side. Not much later, though, Colgate tied the game again, this time at a score of 5-5. Nothing else would happen in the third period, taking this game to Overtime.
Both teams put their 3 players on the ice, and we were underway. It was a short-lived overtime period, as Colgate went down 2 on 1, goalie Mason Patnode made an excellent save, and Colgate buried on the rebound, winning the game 6-5. A good game from each team comes down to the wire, with the Raiders coming out on top. The Cannoneers now sit at a record of 4-2-1.
