On Friday, October 4th, Jefferson Community College (JCC) secured a dramatic 7-6 overtime victory against Paul Smith's College in an exhilarating match at the Watertown Municipal Arena. The game was filled with high-intensity action and featured standout performances from key players, culminating in a hat-trick from Captain Cameron Winebar that sealed the win.
The Cannoneers opened the scoring nine minutes into the first period. Freshman Owen Bismarck capitalized on a power play, sending a low shot through the five-hole of the Bobcats' goalie, assisted by Kyle Gionet. Just four minutes later, Paul Smith's College responded with a goal, following a pass into the slot that found an open player. JCC faced adversity late in the period, taking two penalties, which resulted in the Bobcats netting two power-play goals, giving them a 3-1 lead.
In the second period, JCC mounted their comeback. Twelve minutes in, Kyle Gionet tipped in a power-play goal, assisted by Carson Barrett and Jack Mills. Just two minutes later, the Cannoneers equalized at 3-3 when Captain Cameron Winebar batted in a rebound out of midair, a goal so skillful that Winebar jokingly considered trying out for the baseball team. Owen Bismarck and goaltender Lenny Dormio were credited with assists on the play. As the period progressed, Winebar struck again, putting JCC ahead 4-3 after maneuvering through two defenders and finishing with a five-hole goal, assisted by Quinn Carey. With 45 seconds remaining in the period, Tanner Esposito extended Jefferson's lead to 5-3 with a goal set up by Owen Ebersol. However, the Bobcats responded with a goal in the final seconds of the period, cutting JCC's lead to one.
The third period brought even more excitement. Just one minute into play, Paul Smith's College tied the game at 5-5. They then took the lead eight minutes later with a well-executed goal, making it 6-5. With five minutes remaining, Jefferson's Kyle Gionet outworked the defense in front of the net, burying a loose puck to tie the game at 6-6. Jack Mills and Carson Barrett were credited with the assists.
The game headed into overtime, where Captain Cameron Winebar delivered once again. Just 56 seconds into the extra period, Winebar completed his hat-trick, skating the puck from the boards into the slot and firing a low blocker-side shot to secure the victory for JCC. Carson Barrett assisted on the game-winning goal, capping off an intense and thrilling match.
