Jefferson's 2nd and Final Weekend in Maryland!
The Jefferson Baseball team traveled to Maryland for a second weekend.
Maryland Trip #2 Write Up:
Jefferson's Baseball program traveled to Maryland for another weekend concluding their pre-season Non-Region III schedule playing CCBC-Catonsville (NJCAA DII) and Hagerstown Community College (NJCAA DI).
FRIDAY MARCH 15th @ CCBC Catonsville
1 – 9 inning game: Jefferson 6 – Catonsville 8
The Cannoneers dropped the opening game of the weekend 8-6 even though they controlled the game with a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. Starting for Jefferson was James Matthews (Camden, NY) who contributed 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, and just walking 2 in a no decision. Offensively for the Cannoneers Nicolas Espino (Bronx, NY) lead with 2 singles and freshmen Kyle Simmons recorded a 3 RBI triple.
SATURDAY MARCH 16th @ Hagerstown Community College
Game #1: Jefferson 11 – Hagerstown 2
In game one of a four game set the Cannonneers scored in every inning except one to defeat NJCAA DI Hagerstown 11-2. Josh Amann (Carthage, NY) pitched a complete game 4 hitter to improve his season record to 2-0. Offensively for the Cannonneers Nicolas Espino (Bronx, NY), Louie Diaz (Chicago, IL), and Tyler Decker (Adams, NY) each had 3 hits. For Jefferson we recorded 15 hits, 4 doubles and 10 RBI all in game one.
Game #2: Jefferson 3 – Hagerstown 4
Despite a solid pitching performance from starter Mitchell DuBois (Oneida, NY) the Cannoneers couldn't hold onto a lead and suffered a close loss to end their day Saturday. DuBois pitched 5.33 innings, struck out 6, and allowed only 2 earned runs. Offensively the Cannoneers were lead by Jorge Mera (Bayside, NY) who contributed 2 hits.
SUNDAY MARCH 17th @ Hagerstown Community College
Game #1: Jefferson 5 – Hagerstown 2
Game one Sunday provided to be a great pitching performance from both squads. Cannoneer starter Jacob Welch (Spencerport, NY) pitched 5 innings, struck out 9, walked 3, allowed 4 hits, and gave up 2 earned runs to record his first victory of the season. Freshmen pitcher Eury Villalona (Brooklyn, NY) pitched the final 2 innings, struck out 3 to record his first save of the season. Offensively Tyler Decker (Adams, NY) and Ariel Suriel (Bronx, NY) each recorded 2 hits. Nathan Mastervick (Niagara Falls, ONT) hit a 2 out 2 RBI double in the top of the 6th.
Game #2: Jefferson 2 – Hagerstown 7
The Cannoneers dropped their last game in Maryland 7-2 behind a great pitching performance from Hagerstown's starting pitcher. Kyle Simmons (Watertown, NY) led the Cannoners with 2 hits including a triple and an RBI.
Jefferson will host their home opener this Saturday (weather permitting) versus Corning Community College. The next part of the schedule will feature Mid-State Conference games versus Corning, Broome, Onondaga, Finger Lakes, and Tompkins-Cortland. The Cannoneers Region III Eastern Division schedule starts Tuesday April 2nd versus Hudson Valley.
