Jefferson Baseball travels to Maryland
Jefferson Baseball started their season in Maryland this past weekend.
Jefferson's Baseball program began the season which a trip to Maryland facing two top teams at the NJCAA Division II level. Cecil Community College is ranked 20th in the nation, and Frederick is two years removed from a berth in the NJCAA Division II World Series.
FRIDAY MARCH 8th @ Cecil Community College
Game #1: Jefferson 27 – Cecil 8
For the 2013 season opener the Cannoneers put up 27 runs on 17 hits in North East, Maryland visiting the 20th ranked in the nation in NJCAA DII, Cecil Community College. Josh Amann (Carthage, NY) earned the first victory of the season pitching 5 innings, walking only 3 and 1 strike out. At the plate freshmen Kyle Simmons (Watertown, NY) lead with 5 hits including 8 RBI's, 2 doubles and a triple for his college debut. Other Cannoneer's with multiple hits in the season opener were Nicolas Espino (Bronx, NY), Louie Diaz (Chicago, IL), Nathan Mastervick, Niagara Falls, ONT), and Jason Hardie (Ajax, ONT).
Game #2: Jefferson 6 – Cecil 10
In game 2 Jordan Delaney (Watertown, NY) pitched 3.67 innings and only allowed 1 earned run however defensive mistakes and stranding 13 runners on base would make it enough to not overcome the 4 run deficit. Offensively Tyler Decker (Adams, NY) recorded 2 doubles and a RBI.
SATURDAY MARCH 9th @ Cecil Community College
Game #1: Jefferson 0 – Cecil 10
Game 3 of the 4 game set was all Cecil from the start. Cecil jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and continued to not let up. Cecil managed to only allow 3 hits in game 1 behind starter Brian Greer who pitched a complete game for the Seahawks.
Game #2: Jefferson 1 – Cecil 19
The final game of the 4 game set again was all Cecil. The Seahawks had another great pitching performance behind Jordan Santak who only gave up 3 hits. For the Cannoneer's, sophomore outfielder Nathan Mastervick (Niagara Falls, ONT) recorded 2 of the 3 hits. Freshmen Joey Sewilo (Rochester, NY) recorded the only RBI with a base hit up the middle in the top of the 5th.
SUNDAY MARCH 10th @ Frederick Community College
Game #1: Jefferson 2 – Frederick 4
The Cannoneers lost a close game behind a great pitching performance from sophomore Jake Welch (Spencerport, NY). Welch pitched a complete game 3 hitter, walking 1, and striking out 4. At the plate Calder Roggie (Lowville, NY) and Nathan Mastervick (Niagara Falls, ONT) each provided a hit and an RBI late in the game. The Cannoneer's would fall short of tying Frederick in the top of the 7th leaving 2 runners in scoring position.
Game #2: Jefferson 6 – Frederick 8
The Cannoneer's would close out the first trip with another 2 run loss at Frederick. Jefferson put up 10 hits however left 8 men on base which would be the difference in again another late inning comeback. At the plate Kyle Simmons (Watertown, NY) provided 3 hits, Nicolas Espino (Bronx, NY) and Jordan Parker (Rochester, NY) each recorded 2 hits in the second game of the double header. Louie Diaz (Chicago, IL) recorded 3 RBI's.
The Cannoneer's will take another trip to Maryland on Thursday to play 5 games in 3 days. Friday is one 9-inning game @ NJCAA Division II CCBC-Catonsville, and Saturday and Sunday are double headers @ NJCAA Division I Hagerstown Community College.
